JL59 Time Limit: Set a Session Timer on Your Phone

Set a time limit on your phone: choose your session minutes first, then use Digital Wellbeing's app or site timer on Android, or a Screen Time allowance on iPhone, so the phone ends the session when your plan does.

A time limit works when the phone enforces it, because a promise made at minute one rarely survives minute fifty. This page shows the Android and iPhone settings that end a browser session on schedule, so the limit holds whichever site you are on. It is one of the three limits in the bet responsibly session plan and the one that costs nothing to set.

Set a time limit in five steps

Do these in order before you open a game.

  1. Choose your session minutes and write the number down.
  2. Open Settings, then Digital Wellbeing (Android) or Screen Time (iPhone).
  3. Set the timer, site timer or allowance to your number.
  4. Turn on the protection that stops you editing it mid-session.
  5. When it ends, close the game and walk away from the screen.

The sections below give the exact menu names from Google’s and Apple’s own help pages.

Session limit: pick the minutes first

A session limit is the number of minutes you allow one sitting, and you choose it before the settings screen. Here is an example of how the number maps to a night, with round numbers for illustration.

PlanSession limitSessions per nightTotal
Light20 minutes120 minutes
Standard30 minutes130 minutes
Split15 minutes2, with a break between30 minutes

Shorter sessions with a gap give you a pause to check what you have staked. Whatever you pick, keep the same number three nights running before you change it.

App timer on Android with Digital Wellbeing

Google’s help page describes an app timer that closes an app when your time is spent. Use it for any app you play through, and use the site timer in the next list if you play in the Chrome browser.

  1. Open your device’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Digital Wellbeing, then App timers.
  3. Next to the app you want to limit, tap Set timer.
  4. Choose how much time you can spend in that app, then tap OK.

For a website in Chrome, open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing, tap the chart, then tap Chrome. Tap Show sites, then Show, so the websites you visited are listed. Next to the site, tap Set site timer, choose a time limit and tap OK. Google’s page says that when you run out of time the app closes and its icon dims, and that timers reset at midnight.

To lock the timer, open Settings, tap Digital Wellbeing, then App limits and App limits PIN, and turn on PIN for app time limits. Google’s page says to enter a unique 4-digit PIN and not to share it.

Screen time limit on iPhone

Apple’s Screen Time page gives the equivalent for iPhone, under a feature called Time Allowances. Apple says the Schedules and Time Allowances features need iOS 27 or later.

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Time Allowances.
  3. Drag the slider left or right to set how much time you can spend on your device.
  4. To limit a type of app, tap a category such as Games or Entertainment and drag its slider.
  5. To set when you may play, tap Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, then tap Add Schedule.

Apple’s page also lists Always Allowed, which keeps chosen contacts and apps available whatever the allowance says. Add your family contacts there so a hit limit never cuts off a call.

Problem and fix: when the timer fails

Problem

You raised the timer to keep playing

Fix
Set the App limits PIN on Android and hand the PIN to nobody. On iPhone, set the allowance, then stop opening Screen Time during a session.
Problem

The timer ended the game but you reopened it

Fix
Treat the reopening as your cue for a longer step away. Follow the PAGCOR exclusion programme steps if timers stop holding for you.
Problem

Your site does not appear in Chrome's list

Fix
Open the site once in Chrome, return to Digital Wellbeing, tap the chart, tap Chrome and look again under Show sites.

What to do when the timer rings

Close the game on the first alert, then run this short list.

  1. Log out and close the tab.
  2. Write the minutes you actually played next to the minutes you planned.
  3. Leave the room for ten minutes before you decide anything else.

FAQ

Where do I set a time limit on Android?

Google's help page for Digital Wellbeing says to open the Settings app, tap Digital Wellbeing, then App timers, tap Set timer next to the app, choose how much time you can spend and tap OK. For a website in Chrome, tap the chart, then Chrome, and use Set site timer next to the site.

Where do I set a time limit on iPhone?

Apple's Screen Time page says to open the Settings app, tap Screen Time, then Time Allowances, and drag the slider to change the time you can spend on your device each day. Apple notes these features need iOS 27 or later on your devices.

What happens when the timer runs out?

On Android, Google's page says the app closes and its icon dims, and that app timers reset at midnight. Plan for that reset: if you delete or raise the timer to keep playing, you have chosen to break your own limit.

Does a phone timer replace a PAGCOR exclusion?

No. A timer stops the clock on your phone and you can change it. A PAGCOR exclusion is an order you apply for through PAGCOR, and the first six months of a self exclusion are irrevocable.
