JL59 Take a Break From Betting: A Five-Step Routine

Take a break by closing the game, logging out, naming a return date, telling one person and filling the gap with a plan.

Fill the gap with a plan

To take a break from betting that holds, you need a routine, not a promise. The five steps below work for one evening or for a month, and the routine is the same at every length. They sit inside the wider bet responsibly checklist on this site, which covers the limits you set before a session.

Take a break in five steps

Run these in order, and do step 1 right now if you are in a session.

  1. Close the game and log out of every casino you play on.
  2. Write a return date on paper or in your phone calendar.
  3. Delete saved logins and bookmarks, and mute casino messages.
  4. Message one friend or family member with your return date.
  5. Pick what you will do at your usual playing hours for the first three evenings.

Each step removes one way back in. Step 2 matters most, because an open-ended pause ends the first time a promotion catches your eye.

Pick a cool off period you can keep

A cool off period is a break with a start date and an end date. Choose the shortest length that fits what just happened.

What happenedCool off periodWhy this length
Ran past your stop time once1 dayResets the habit before the next session
Staked more than your budget1 weekLong enough to feel the gap in your routine
Chased a loss2 to 4 weeksLong enough to break the habit of checking
Broke a breakAsk PAGCOR about exclusionThe shortest PAGCOR period is 6 months

The lengths up to a month are suggestions for you to adjust; the 6 months in the last row comes from PAGCOR’s own exclusion page. If you are unsure, pick the longer one.

Make the first ten minutes away easy

The first ten minutes after you close the game are the easiest time to go back, so decide in advance what fills them. Use this list.

  1. Stand up and leave the room where you play.
  2. Drink a glass of water and eat something.
  3. Send the message to your friend from step 4.
  4. Start the thing you picked in step 5, for ten minutes only.

If the urge is still there after ten minutes, run the list once more.

When the break breaks: problem and fix

Problem

You reopened the game on day two

Fix
Do not count it as a failure. Log out, restart the clock from today and add one day to the return date. Tell the person from step 4 what happened.
Problem

You keep checking your balance

Fix
Remove the saved login and bookmark first, then use the time limit steps for your phone to cap how long the browser can run on a day when you must be online.
Problem

Every break ends within a week

Fix
A break you can undo is not holding. Read the PAGCOR exclusion programme steps, which give you a block you cannot lift on impulse.

When a break is not enough

PAGCOR’s saved exclusion page offers two programmes. Self exclusion covers 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and the first six months are irrevocable. Family exclusion lets a spouse, child or parent apply on your behalf, for 6 months, 1 year or 3 years.

PAGCOR’s page says the exclusion is implemented across all sites licensed and operated by PAGCOR. Use it as your harder block, and keep your phone timer and your cool off period running beside it for any site it does not cover. Read the responsible play page of this site for where help sits.

Who to call during a break

Take the number from the body itself.

  1. Gamblers Anonymous Philippines, listed on PAGCOR’s responsible gaming page: 0915 938 2808.
  2. National Problem Gambling, listed on the same page: landline (02) 8248 9568.
  3. In Touch Community Services, free and anonymous crisis line, 24/7: +63 2 8893 7603.

Calling on day one of a break is a good use of day one.

FAQ

How long should a break from betting last?

Match the length to the reason. After one bad session, a full day is enough to reset. After chasing losses or breaking a stop time, take a week to a month. If you cannot hold a month, ask PAGCOR about exclusion, whose shortest period is 6 months.

Can I take a break without telling anyone?

Yes, but telling one person gives the break a witness, because someone will ask how it is going. Pick a friend or family member and send a single message with your return date.

What counts as a cool off period?

A cool off period is a stretch you set yourself, with a start date and an end date, during which you place no bets anywhere. Write both dates down and set a reminder for the end date, not for the start.

Is a break the same as PAGCOR exclusion?

No. A break is yours to end. PAGCOR's saved programme page says the first six months of a self exclusion are irrevocable, and the order is lifted automatically when the period you chose ends.
