JL59 Help Desk: What Is a Payline, and When Ways Replace It

Ticket: “Three matching sevens on screen and nothing paid.” The usual cause is a payline. So, what is a payline? It is a predrawn track over the reels, and matching symbols earn nothing unless they all sit on that track. Three sevens scattered across different rows sit on no single line, so a one-line game pays nothing for them.
What is a payline: fixed lines, with real games
Studios print the line count on each game page. These come from JILI’s pages, Betsoft’s page and this site’s game data.
| Game | Studio | Structure | Line or ways count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crazy 777 | JILI | 3-reel classic | 1 payline |
| Money Coming | JILI | 3-reel | 1 line |
| Fortune Gems | JILI | 3x3 grid | 5 paylines |
| Gemini Joker | Betsoft | 5 reels | 5 paylines |
| Boxing King | JILI | 5-reel | 88 paylines |
With fixed paylines, the paytable draws each line. Read it once per game: two games with the same reel count can draw completely different paths.
JL59 paylines: titles from the lobby’s Hot list
Several titles in the JL59 lobby’s Hot list use ways instead of lines. Super Ace runs 1024 ways, Golden Empire 32400 megaways, and PG Soft’s Mahjong Ways 2 and Wild Bandito are ways-to-win slots. Fortune Gems, also on that list, keeps five fixed paylines.
Paylines vs ways: how each counts a win
Ways-to-win games remove the fixed paths. A symbol counts if it lands anywhere on adjacent reels, normally starting from the first reel. The number of ways is the rows multiplied across the reels.
| Grid | Calculation | Ways |
|---|---|---|
| 5 reels x 3 rows | 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 | 243 |
| 5 reels x 4 rows (Super Ace) | 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 x 4 | 1024 |
| Changing rows per spin (Golden Empire) | Varies each spin | Up to 32400 |
Problem: a fish game shows no lines at all. Cause: it is not a slot. JILI’s fishing pages print Paylines 0, because you aim and fire instead. Fix: read the bet per shot, not a line count.
Problem: a 1024-ways game feels like it pays more often but less each time. Cause: a ways count says how many combinations can pay, not how much each one pays. Fix: compare the max win and, where the studio prints them, the RTP and volatility label, not the ways count alone.
Red flags to watch for
- A “line pattern” for sale. Outcomes come from a random number generator, which GLI describes as producing numbers with no predictable pattern. No line is due.
- A line count that differs from the studio page. A game whose paytable disagrees with the studio’s printed paylines may be a copy.
- An RTP quoted for a JILI title. JILI’s game pages print no RTP at all, so any figure quoted has no studio behind it.
- “More lines, more wins” sales talk. Line count shapes how wins are drawn, not how much the game returns.
- A paytable you cannot open. A real game shows its rules screen; a game hiding it gives you nothing to check.
The words in this article, from max win to RTP, are in the casino terms glossary. Volatility, the other half of the picture, has its own page at slot volatility for peso budgets, and how to choose a slot machine puts both together.

How to Get Started
-
Open the paytable
Inside the game, tap the info icon and find either the diagram of lines or the line stating its ways count.
-
Note the direction
Check whether wins count from the leftmost reel, in both directions, or anywhere, as the paytable shows.
-
Compare it with the studio page
Match the line or ways count with the studio's own game page; a mismatch suggests a copy rather than the original.
